First Green CSCS Card Validity Reduced To 2 Years

As of the 1st of February, 2025, a worker’s first Green CSCS labourer card will have its validity reduced from 5 years to 2. In other words, you will need to renew your first Green CSCS card after 2 years rather than 5.

In conjunction with this move, the validity of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) test is being increased to 3 years. For holders of the green CSCS card, this means the qualification will still be valid when it comes to renewing their first green card after the new reduced period of 2 years.

This is a significant change by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It aims to promote greater skills development among labourers. In this brief guide, we share everything you need to know about this shift.

Why Is The CSCS Green Card Validity Being Reduced?

The decision to make Green CSCS cards valid for a shorter period relates to CSCS’s drive to improve standards across the workforce. According to CSCS, the shorter validity period will encourage new construction workers to take their learning and development further within the construction field.

This ensures that individuals are progressing beyond the foundational skills assessed by the Green CSCS card. It is hoped that this will motivate more people to advance towards more specialised qualifications and roles.

A CSCS spokesperson made the following statement:

“We want labourers to think of the Green CSCS card as a stepping stone rather than a long-term credential. We have reduced the card’s validity to 2 years to help motivate people to pursue further training and qualifications with the goal of elevating the industry as a whole.”

What Does This Mean for Labourers?

The new, 2-year validity has the following effects for labourers:

  • Greater Focus on Development: Labourers will not need to consider taking further training or getting qualifications like NVQs within the first 2 years of their career.
  • A Renewal Process: Before the 2-year period is up, workers will need to show evidence of taking additional training or advance to a higher-level CSCS card.
  • Opportunities to Progress: This change encourages workers to take advantage of training resources to climb the career ladder.

What Will This Mean for Employers?

Employers are urged to support their workforce to take training and remain compliant with CSCS standards. It is believed that this change will result in a more skilled and qualified workforce which will ultimately benefit the industry as a whole.

Looking Ahead

This decision by the CSCS reflects a broader trend towards encouraging more skill development in construction. Labourers can view this as a chance to grow their career prospects.

By engaging with training and taking further certifications, individuals have the power to unlock new opportunities while doing their bit to bring in higher standards throughout the construction sector.
