The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate is made up of two units: EMC1 and EMC2, covering 11 key elements of health and safety management.

Unit EMC1 – Environmental Management

This unit focuses on the principles and systems needed to manage environmental and sustainability aspects, including:

• Foundations in environmental management.
• Environmental management systems.
• Assessing environmental aspects and impacts.
• Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies.
• Control of emissions to air.
• Control of environmental noise.
• Control of contamination of water sources.
• Control of waste and land use.
• Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency.

Unit EMC2 – Assessing Environmental Aspects and Associated Impacts

This unit is highly practical and focuses on identifying and assessing workplace environmental aspects and impacts.

We fully prepare you for both assessments and guide you through the process step by step.

EMC1 – Open Book Examination
You’ll have 24 hours to complete the exam, answering questions based on realistic workplace scenarios. Exams are available every 3 months, offering flexibility around work commitments.


EMC2 – Assessing Environmental Aspects and Impacts

This involves completing an aspects and impacts assessment in your own workplace, allowing you to apply what you’ve learned directly. The EMC2 assessment must be completed within 10 days of finishing the EMC1 exam.

You must achieve an appropriate passing mark in both units to gain the qualification.

Many learners progress from the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate to the Level 6 NVQ Occupational Health & Safety, a degree-level qualification that significantly enhances career prospects within the health and safety profession.

There are no formal entry requirements, making this an ideal starting point for health and safety training.

You must have a suitable standard of English.

You’ll need access to a computer or laptop, a stable internet connection, Dropbox and a Zoom account.

The course involves 67 hours of study, including taught learning and background reading.

Your final grade (Distinction, Credit, Pass or Refer) is based on the EMC1 exam result, but both units must be passed.

Certification is valid for life.
