NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

Our qualification is designed for anyone (managers, supervisors and workers) in any type of organisation. It’s ideal for anyone who needs a broad understanding of health and safety issues to be able to manage day-to-day risks effectively. Many people take the National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NGC) as a first step in a career in health and safety. It gives a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study

The NGC looks at everyday solutions for general workplace health and safety issues. At the end of the course, you will have an understanding of:

  • The need for health and safety improvements
  • Advising on duties under the main pieces of UK health and safety legislation
  • Helping your organisation to manage contractors and positively influence health and safety culture and behaviour
  • Carrying out a general risk assessment (using a 5-step approach) of your workplace;
  • Incident investigations which include helping your employer check the effectiveness of their health and safety management system through monitoring, auditing and review.
Progression

Natural progression from this course would be to take the Level 6 NVQ Occupational Health & Safety, which is a degree-level qualification that advances your prospects as a health and safety professional.
How it Works

The NEBOSH General Certificate syllabus is divided into 2 parts NG1 & NG2 and covers 11 elements:

Unit NG1: Management of Health and Safety

· Why we should manage workplace health and safety.

How health and safety management systems work and what they look like.

• Managing risk – understanding people and processes
• Health and safety monitoring and measuring

Unit NG2: Risk Assessment

• Physical and psychological health
• Musculoskeletal health
• Chemical and biological agents
• General workplace issues
• Work equipment
• Fire
• Electricity

To pass, you will need to complete an Open Book Examination for NG1 and also complete a practical assessment (NG2)

NG1 - Open book exam which you will have 24 hours to complete. It requires you to answer a set of questions relating to real-life scenarios and these exams are available every month

NG2 - Practical risk assessment, carried out in your workplace. This must be done with 10 days of completing the NG1 Open Book Examination

Important stuff

There are no formal entry requirements: which makes the NEBOSH Certificate an ideal starting point for your health and safety training but you must have a suitable standard of English language

You will also need access to a computer/ laptop, must have the capabilities to access Dropbox & a Zoom account and have a stable Internet connection

A ‘pass’ must be achieved in both units to achieve the National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Our NEBOSH General Certificate is also available to complete in our classroom in Dagenham or via our blended learning package

Our National General Certificate consists of 108 hours of study and background reading

Your qualification grade is based only on the result from the question paper (Unit NG1). But you need to achieve a ‘Pass’ in both units (NG1 and NG2) before the parchment can be issued. The grading boundaries are as follows: Distinction, Credit, Pass or Refer

Certification for this course is valid for life
